THOMASVILLE —
Election officials in Thomas and Grady counties predict low voter turnouts Tuesday, despite hotly contested races in both political entities.
In Thomas County, the electorate will decide whether Mark Mitchell or Andrew Pope replaces Elliott McCollum as judge of State Court of Thomas County.
As soon as McCollum said earlier this year he would not seek re-election, Mitchell and Pope announced their candidacy for the non-partisan post.
Another incumbent officeholder not seeking re-election is District 6 Thomas County Commissioner Mary Jo Beverly.
The District 6 seat is being sought by political newcomers Gene Price and Wiley Grady. Both candidates are Republicans.
Republican Frank Warr, incumbent District 4 Thomas County Board of Education member, is seeking re-election. He is being challenged by Derwood Hickey, also a Republican.
In Grady County, two Democrats are challenging incumbent Sheriff Harry Young, also a Democrat.
Democratic challengers for the position of Grady County’s highest-ranking law enforcement officer are Odell Jolly and Jerome Smiley.
The winner of Tuesday’s primary election — and a possible runoff — will square off with Republican sheriff candidate Earl Stuckey in the November general election.
