THOMASVILLE —
City of Thomasville staff convened early Friday morning to put a plan in place to handle approaching Tropical Storm Isaac.
Expected to reach the Thomasville area early next week, Isaac has the potential to reach hurricane status and bring heavy rainfall and wind to the area.
During storm conditions, tree limbs become a major contributor to power outages. To lessen the likelihood of tree-related outages, city crews routinely maintain trees surrounding aerial utilities, such as power lines and fiber-optic cable.
The fiber-optic infrastructure is responsible for transmitting broadband services, such as Internet and IP telephone, and every precaution is taken to be sure the services remain operational during storm conditions.
“Without this regular maintenance, the average number of storm-related outages our customers experience would be much higher than they are at present,” said City Manager/Utilities Superintendent Steve Sykes.
Even with precautionary measures, storm-related service interruptions might still take place.
“City utility crews will be on call to assist with any storm-related service interruptions, but citizens should be aware that any severe storm has the potential to cause outages,” Sykes said. “Our utility crews are highly trained and, in most cases, are able to restore services in a reasonable amount of time.”
City crews are planning for the impending storm by assembling equipment, assessing staffing plans and other preparations.
