THOMASVILLE —
One of the fastest race engine-building teams in the world is right here in our backyard. Thomas County Central’s hot rodders have put in more than 400 hours of practice to become the best.
“We started hot rodders at the end of November 2011, and we had our first competition in February after only practicing for a few months,” said Mason Miller, instructor for the race engine building team. “We have practiced more than the football team. We have even competed against college students. We have already traveled a little over 7,000 miles.”
Miller was with General Motors for 14 years.
“Mr. Miller is a genius,” said Brice Evans, a member of the team.
The team meets multiple times a week and so far has assembled an engine 350 times.
“We take a 350 Chevrolet engine apart and put it back together as fast as we can. The engine has about 264 parts. It has to be torqued, and it has to be done right because the judges check everything,” said Tyler Boyette, captain of the team. “We have five people on the team at a competition. We have four on the motor and one at the back table to keep things organized.”
The team has trimmed its original time of 40 minutes to 20.
