Man gets prison in Bubba case

THOMASVILLE — The community rallied around an Atlanta woman whose English bulldog was stolen from a Thomasville boarding facility in the fall of 2011.

On Monday, the man charged with stealing Bubba was sentenced to prison, among a number of other penalties, by Thomas County Superior Court Judge Harry Jay Altman.

Tony Lee Davis, 34, was denied bond and has been in the Thomas County Jail since Oct. 5, 2011.

When Bubba’s owner, Teresa McMillian, went to get her dog from the boarder, the canine was gone. Bubba’s disappearance was said to be the result of a burglary.

For two weeks, McMillan and a number of townspeople looked for the dog. Finally, Bubba’s collar and identification tags were found alongside a Thomasville street.

Williams declared her dog dead and returned home.

As Davis stood before the judge in the Jail-Justice Center courtroom Monday morning, McMillan stood nearby.

She looked at Davis and said, “I strongly believe in forgiveness, and I strongly believe in the process of the country and justice in this country.”

Public defender Jennifer Phillips told Altman she had a letter from Davis’ mother that said her son had long-standing drug and alcohol problems and had been in and out of prison since he was 15. The defendant’s mother requested mandatory drug/alcohol rehabilitation.

Davis apologized and said he was under the influence of alcohol the night Bubba was taken. He said the dog got out, and he chased it. Davis said he caught the bulldog and tied him to a fence post.
