THOMASVILLE —
Middle School Director Raina Cauley notified Brookwood School faculty members in early April that, for three weeks, dance classes would take place during physical education for students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades.
For the rest of the month, middle school students were seen in the gym learning to fox trot, waltz, shag, hustle, salsa, rumba, and perform other dances.
Their teacher, Michael Pozo, is a certified instructor with the National League of Junior Cotillions. At Brookwood, he taught not only a wide array of dance techniques but also the etiquette to accompany them.
According to Cauley, Pozo taught the students about introductions, courtesies, how to sit and stand at a dance, engaging in polite and friendly conversation, dance introductions, and how to walk a dance partner to and from the dance floor.
“He included lessons on paying and receiving compliments, general manners while at public events, being a guest at a party, dance etiquette, encouraging others to participate, and training in poise and confidence,” Cauley explained. “It is our hope that these life lessons will carry on not only to homecoming dances and prom, but also to college and adult events as well.”
