THOMASVILLE —
Seven kids, one coach, 14 competitors, one chance.
On April 14, one Thomasville City Scholars Academy Odyssey of the Mind team captured second place in the Georgia Finals and accomplished the unthinkable. It qualified for the World Finals.
Theteam is comprised of Cameren Rogers, Jacob Rieber, Mason Hodge, Sharon Autry, Shivanee Patel, Aaliyah Robinson and Zenobia Turner. Their problem was “To Be Or Not To Be,” and their skit was a mash-up of “Harry Potter” and “Twilight.”
Odyssey of the Mind, or OM, is a creative problem-solving competition for students from kindergarten to college-level from 25 different countries. Teams of 5-7 students create a solution to their chosen problem and present it in competitions. These teams spend months creating and perfecting these solutions. The three levels of competition are regional, state, and world.
“OM is different,” said Creative Thinking teacher and OM coach Sharon Cernogorsky. “Yes, it is a competitive program, but it’s nothing like your typical sporting event. OM encourages kids to be the best they can be, but it’s a friendly competition. Kids learn from and even cheer on their competition.”
