SWGTC Hosts Thomasville High School Students for Shadow Day

THOMASVILLE —

Southwest Georgia Technical College (SWGTC) hosted a Program Shadow Day for Thomasville High School (THS) on April 24. This shadow day is an event that allows students from the high school (all grades) to choose a program of interest at SWGTC and spend 2 hours of their day shadowing the instructor and students of that program. Some of the programs chosen for shadowing were Criminal Justice Technology, Medical Assisting Technology, and Veterinary Technology.

”I think today was a prime example of the reason why SWGTC holds events like Program Shadow Day. The students from Thomasville High School were surprised by what they learned and experienced in the programs they were shadowing and are now eager about all the opportunities that are available at SWGTC,” Betsy Forehand, SWGTC Recruiter.

Many high school students may not be aware of all the program options SWGTC has to offer them, so Program Shadow Day is the perfect way to distribute information. Students receive hands-on experience in a program of their choice, which allows them to have a better understanding of what career they might pursue. Program Shadow Day is also a great way for SWGTC to educate students about the importance of higher education.

“The Program Shadow Day serves as a wonderful incentive for our students. They can see for themselves the state-of-the art facilities at SWGTC and the diverse programs that are offered. Therefore, they are more eager than ever to pursue dual enrollment opportunities their junior and senior years. And, they know that they must do well in their classes now so that they will qualify for the programs,” Shamane Taylor, THS Work- Based Learning Coordinator.

SWGTC offers more than 80 certificate, diploma, and degree programs. Many of these programs provide training for some of the nation’s fastest-growing career fields including Nursing, Automotive Technology, Clinical Laboratory Technology, and Emergency Medical Technology. More information may be obtained by calling 229-225- 4096 or by logging onto www.southwestgatech.edu.

Summer semester begins May 21.
