THOMASVILLE —
The clean-up effort during and after Rose Festival activities was a well-orchestrated effort.
About 4.5 tons of debris had been collected after festivities ended late Saturday afternoon. To facilitate collection efforts, a side-arm garbage truck was placed out of site at Paradise Park.
City of Thomasville Solid Waste Department staff worked at Paradise Park and in the downtown area. Workers were assigned to keep trash receptacles emptied and to clean up loose debris.
Staff also worked downtown and in any other areas that would see increased foot traffic because of the Rose Show and other festival activities, again removing debris and emptying trash receptacles.
The Public Works Department led by Mike Atkinson and solid waste headed by Nate Tyler assigned teams to begin removing debris, sweeping streets, moving or removing barricades and other tasks needed for the next event on the schedule.
Mayor Max Beverly said Atkinson’s goal was to have the city back in order by the end of the day Saturday.
To meet the goal, a public works crew followed the last runner in the Rose City Run, and the crew picked up cones and barricades on the course not needed for the 1-mile Fun Run later in the morning.
