THOMASVILLE —
A Georgia legislator’s efforts — spurred by the death of a Thomasville girl killed by dogs in her backyard — have come to fruition.
Gov. Nathan Deal signed into law the Georgia Responsible Dog Owner Act, the signature piece of legislation for retiring District 172 state Rep. Gene Maddox, R-Cairo, said Maddox, who will not seek re-election when his term expires Dec. 31.
“I was thrilled to be there to see the governor sign this bill. I’ve been working on it for the last two-and-a-half years,” Maddox said.
Five-year-old Cheyenne Peppers was killed by dogs in the backyard of her Thomasville home in January 2009.
