By PattiThomas County Area Transit (TCAT) is a stand-out system in Southwest Georgia, according to the consultant for the bus transportation service.
“We pride ourselves in being one of the best rural transit systems in Southwest Georgia, and we have been,” consultant Brad Sheffield told Thomas County commissioners Tuesday.
TCAT provides transportation services to residents, human services agencies and communities within Thomas County.
In its 10th year, a third-party operator oversaw the system until 2006.
The system’s annual budget is $1 million. Funding comes from the federal transit system, state contracts and passenger fees.
“We’re not exceeding expenses with revenue coming in,” Sheffield said.
The cost of fuel continues to be the most unstable operating expense. Recent fuel prices are increasing to a level similar to 2008.
