SCBC in critical need of O negative

THOMASVILLE — The supply of O negative blood type has fallen to less than a one-day supply.  This drop in supply is largely due to lower blood donations attributed to the holiday week; local blood donors travelling out of town and higher patient usage. Southeastern Community Blood Center (SCBC) officials are appealing to the public to donate blood immediately.

To help motivate healthy individuals to give blood this summer, SCBC has instituted two donor incentive programs launched July 1.

Those giving blood will receive a beach bag at the time of their donation and be entered into SCBC’s and Flowers Automotive Group’s Honda for the Holidays promotion. SCBC asks healthy individuals to do their “civic duty” by “getting into the ‘Civic spirit’” and giving a pint of blood. SCBC officials’ hope donors will consider giving more than once between now and Dec. 8 for multiple entries into a drawing.

Every week through– Dec. 8, one lucky winner (23 in all) will be chosen as a finalist. On Dec. 15, one finalist will roll away the Winner of a brand new Honda Civic donated by Flowers Automotive Group in Thomasville.

Only 6.5 percent of the population has O negative blood. However, O negative is the universal blood type,  which means it can be given to any patient regardless of the recipients’ blood type. It is critical to the survival of emergency patients, trauma patients, premature babies and cancer patients. Blood donated today will likely be transfused into a patient within 48 to 72 hours. Additionally, O negative people can only receive O negative blood, so give in case you need it.  SCBC is also experiencing an elevated need for all blood types. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a parent’s permission) and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds.Donors receive a free cholesterol screening and wellness results online, or by phone, 72 hours after donating.
