THOMASVILLE —
Pebble Hill’s Barbara Cohenour will be discussing the plantation’s antique photo collection and the history of early cameras at the third Enlightening Bites on Nov. 2 at noon.
Bring a brown bag lunch, listen and learn in the Flipper Room, Thomas County Public Library, Thomasville.
In 1888, George Eastman patented his first camera. It was designed for amateurs and used Eastman’s newly invented dry, flexible, rolled photographic film.
In 1890, 19-year-old Kate Benedict Hanna traveled to Yellowstone National Park and took along her new-fangled Kodak.
The Pebble Hill Collection contains thousands of photographs. The earliest snapshots are those Kate took on her 1890 vacation. Kate, her family members and her friends became avid photographers. They recorded their south Georgia lifestyle, along with other exciting experiences, in a plethora of black and white photos. The photos are stored in numerous black picture albums, each with the date and location of its contents stamped in gold on the cover. Many of these photographs have not been seen for years. Lecture patrons will get a preview of the photographs featured in the new PHP exhibit “Family Photographs by Fabulous Photographers.”
