THOMASVILLE —
Thomasville City Scholars Academy Mock Trial participants immersed themselves in the world of law at the mock medical malpractice trial held at Archbold Memorial Hospital in September.
Erin White, Mock Trial sponsor and Advanced Placement History and Psychology teacher, took the students to observe training intended to educate nurses as to what goes on in the legal process. The experience gave students the opportunity to learn how to enhance their presentation styles, present evidence, and become more effective in arguments.
Returning Mock Trial member Bryce Trotter said, “One thing I learned from this trial was how to better present the evidence I have and utilize them to their fullest potential.”
White and attorney coach George Lilly are beginning to prepare their students for their third year of competition starting in February. In the competitions, students are either lawyers or witnesses and are evaluated based on their statements and/or persuasive presentations.
The Scholars Academy Mock Trial has a very promising year ahead. There will be lots of returning members to bring experience, as well as new members to bring fresh ideas to the debate.
Evan Pell, also a returning Mock Trial member, said, “As long as the witnesses know the facts about the cases, I think we will do very well this year.”
Mock Trial was created to “give students an inside prospective of the legal system.” (www2.mnbar.org/mocktrial) Many lawyers participate in Mock Trial while in high school to get a feel of what the procedures are in the courtroom and what goes into presenting a case.
