Gregory Alan Cox
Beloved husband, father, and son, Gregory Alan Cox, 60, was born in Dublin, Ga., to parents Henry Lee and Mardre Ann Cox on April 15, 1950. He passed away on June 10, 2010 in Bakersfield, Calif. He graduated with honors from Dublin High School in 1968 and earned his bachelor’s of electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1973 where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He went on to receive his MBA from California State University, Bakersfield in 2001 where he was elected to Beta Gamma Sigma honorary society and recognized as outstanding graduating MBA student. The majority of Greg's career was spent as a manager in the oil and gas industry. Greg was also a part-time instructor of management and computer information systems classes for the University of Phoenix and California State University, Bakersfield. Greg was a consummate professional who was respected and admired for his leadership. More than anything Greg delighted in the many close friendships formed throughout his career. Greg always had time for his family and friends. He loved baseball and good music, he was an avid reader and history enthusiast, and he was a legend on the dance floor. His passion, kindness, and love will be greatly missed. Greg is survived by his wife of 34 years, Sandy; daughter, Shanna and husband Chris Young; son, Shea; mother, Mardre Ann; brother, John and wife Susan; niece, Alison and husband Andrew Barrett; niece, Courtney; nephew, Blair; and many cousins. Greg is predeceased by his father, Henry. At this time, no memorial service is planned. At his request, a gathering of friends and family will be scheduled at a later date. W.G. Hortman
Services for W.G. Hortman, 90, of Pavo, are at 3 p.m., Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Baker-Harrell-Faircloth Chapel in Moultrie. The Rev. Neil Hosey will officiate and interment is in Pinecrest Memory Gardens. Pallbearers are his nephews. Mr. Hortman died June 14 at Colquitt Regional Medical Center. Born Sept. 29, 1919, in Sylvester, he was a son of the late Exie Virginia Mitchell Hortman and Oliver Jackson Hortman. He was married for 56 years to the late Grace Cannon Hortman. He was a farmer and a member of Autreyville Baptist Church. Survivors include his sons, Danny Hortman and wife, Sandra of Pavo, Van Hortman of Pavo; brothers, J.C. Hortman and wife, Francis of Pavo, Myles Hortman of Moultrie; sisters, Mavan Pittman of Tallahassee, Fla.; grandchildren, Lea Champion and husband, Heath, Lynn Dorsey and husband, Hal; five great-grandchildren, Carson, Gracie, Maggie, Hudson and Hayden Champion. He was preceded in death by brothers, Horace and Bill Hortman; sisters, Clara Culbreth, Voncile Carter, Lorene Harrington, Mamie Lee Hill and Exie Perkins. Austen Thomas Hurst
Services for Austen Thomas Hurst, 70, are at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at New Bethel Baptist Church. The Rev. Dion Brown will officiate and interment is in the church cemetery. Pallbearers are Padon Hurst, Kyle Hurst, Matthew McMullen, Bradford Hurst, Roy Mac Alligood, Glenn Timmons, John Rich, Scott Miller, Gary Hurst and Trey Hayes. Mr. Hurst died Saturday, June 12, at his residence in Meigs. He was married to Virdis Barrineau Hurst. Born on Sept. 17, 1939 in Meigs, he was the son of the late Austin and Annie Jane Shirah Hurst. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church and was a carpenter by trade. Survivors include Mr. Hurst's wife of 51 years, Virdis Barrineau Hurst of Meigs; children, Debra Jewell Holt of Naples, Fla., Rodney Austen Hurst and wife, Elaine, of Meigs, Karen Doherty and husband, Mike of Melbourne, Fla.; grandchildren, Mary Hardwick Griffin, Erica Holt Strang and husband, Justin, Jason Aldredge, Ryan Doherty, Ashley Doherty, Justin Hurst, Nicole Hurst; great-grandchildren, Cooper Welch, Baley Welch, Logan Griffin, Landen McMullen; sisters, Myrtic H. Williams and husband, James of Thomasville, Wilma H. Benton and husband, M.L. of Thomasville, Geneva H. Nixon and husband, Wesley, of Pelham, Minnie Lee H. Clayton and husband, Leonard, of Whigham, Patricia H. Hinson and husband, Robert of Cairo. Mr. Hurst was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Richard K. Mr. Smith died Saturday, June 12, at his residence on Bulloch Road in Meigs. Born in Thomas County, Ga., on Nov. 16, 1935, Mr. Smith was the son of the late Thurston and Lucia McDaniel Smith. He was a farmer and a member of Midway Baptist Church. Named Farm Family in 2000, Mr. Smith was an avid fisherman and hunter and had a deep love for his family. Survivors include his wife, Peggy W. Smith of Meigs; daughters, Marcia Carnline and husband, Gary, of Ochlocknee, Angela Taylor and husband, Steve, of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Cody Carnline, Brannon and Bailee Taylor of Fayetteville; a sister, Joan Tate of Meigs; and numerous nieces and nephews.
