Flower Show starts Friday

THOMASVILLE — The 90th annual Standard Flower Show is here, but special event tickets are still available and community members can still enter the public horticulture division.

The show, sponsored by Thomasville Garden Club Inc., opens Friday after a 1:15 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony to be held at Thomasville Garden Center, 1102 South Broad St.

It is dedicated to the memory of Kate Ireland and is open 1:30 to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

“We are all working hard to have a beautiful show,” Julia Singletary, show chairman, said. “We hope everyone will come out and see it. A visit to our flower show is a wonderful way to welcome spring and get in the gardening mood.”

The show features general horticulture entries, special exhibits and youth horticultural entries. These entries include creative floral designs presented by members of the three local garden clubs, Briarcliff, Killarney Queen and Rambler Rose.

The theme for design entries is “Thomasville Celebrates Spring” and visitors can expect to see six different classes of floral designs with each category offering four competing displays, all centered around local nonprofits’ spring events.

The public has a chance to participate in the show with two classes in the horticulture division: youth and general.

These entries will be accepted from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday.

Awards are given for each division and class.

The show also features some special events, such as “Marketplace” with various gardening items for sale, and two occasions that require tickets: the “Luncheon/Fashion Show” and “Wine & Cheese.”

The Luncheon/Fashion Show features downtown merchants and precedes the show's opening at 12:30 p.m. Friday on the center’s front lawn.

“Wine & Cheese” is a private viewing of the show accompanied by live music and scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Friday

Singletary said tickets are still available for both events.

“We added ‘Wine & Cheese’ Friday afternoon to bring a social element to the show,” Sandra Hall, event co-chairman, said.

“It’s a great opportunity for women to get their husbands and friends to see everything and the afternoon should be beautiful on the patio. We’ll have a jazz pianist and great food!”
