Coolidge church reaches out on Thanksgiving

COOLIDGE — Thanksgiving Eve in this Thomas County town was an all-nighter for one man, and the day began at 4 Thanksgiving morning for a married couple.

Tommy Baker smoked 18 turkeys for 14 hours to have them ready in time for the mid-day Thanksgiving meal at the Coolidge Memorial Baptist Church fellowship hall.

“I had to check them pretty much every hour,” Baker explained, adding that he catnapped during the smoking process. He finally got up for good at 3 a.m.

Sue and Darrell Davis began making dressing at 4 a.m.

“This is our second year,” said Kathy Keown, wife of Memorial Baptist minister Mike Keown.

About 70 meals were served at the 2011 event. That many — and more — were expected Thursday.

Many dinners are delivered or picked up and taken home by local residents.

Church members, including men and the pastor, prepare the food for the event, described as an outreach and ministry to the community.

“We want to make it a blessing to the community,” the pastor said.
