Cairo teen reported missing

CAIRO —  Cairo High School ninth-grader Morgan Maclay Singletary has been missing since Monday. The 14-year-old girl was last seen at the school around 2:30 p.m.

Singletary is approximately 4-11, 115 pounds with blue eyes and black hair. She has a birth mark on her right wrist. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, black shoes and a blue Florida Gators pull-over.

“We are working hard to find her,” Grady County Sheriff Harry Young said.

Around 2:45 p.m. on Monday, a signal from Singletary’s cell phone bounced off a tower in Thomas County.

“We believe she is in the Thomasville area,” Grady County Sheriff’s Office investigator Robert Simmons said.

When Shonda Singletary, Morgan’s mother, returned home from work at 6 p.m. on Monday, she found her daughter “no where to be found.”

Shonda recalled trying to reach her daughter around 4:30 p.m. on Monday.

“She didn’t answer her phone,” the mother said. “I figured she was just taking a nap. She had a friend over for the weekend, so I thought she may have been tired.”

At that point, she didn’t know that her daughter hadn’t reported to her seventh-period class or taken the school bus home.

In a desperate attempt to locate her daughter, she spoke to David McCurry, principal of Cairo High School, on Wednesday about proper protocol for students who miss class.

“I wanted to know why the teacher didn’t immediately call me,” she said. “He said that the school calls the parents of the students who repeatedly miss class.”

At press time, the Times-Enterprise was unable to contact McCurry.

According to Simmons, this is the fourth time Morgan has gone missing.

“Morgan was missing for about four and half hours in late October 2012,” Simmons said. “This is the longest she’s been gone.”

The mother added, “People are asking me if she is a runaway, but if a mother doesn’t know where their child is, then they are missing.”
