Millage to be set Monday

THOMASVILLE — Taxpayers will have a third chance Monday to let Thomas County commissioners know how they feel about a proposed property tax increase.

The third — and last — public hearing on the proposed tax hike is at 10 a.m. Monday at Thomas County Emergency Services Agency, 1202 Remington Ave.

Commissioners approved tentative millage in late July. The board has conducted two public hearings on the subject and met with considerable vocal opposition at both.

At the second hearing, a citizen presented the board with a petition that contained more than 200 signatures of taxpayers opposed to the hike.

The board voted 4-3 on the proposed increase. Following the Monday hearing, the board will vote on the final rate.

Commissioner Phillip Brown made the motion to set the tentative millage, with a second by Commissioner Merrill Baker. Brown, Baker, Chairman Elaine Mays and Vice Chairman Moses Gross voted in favor of the proposed hike.

Nay votes were cast by commissioners Mark NeSmith, Ken Hickey and Hershel Ansley. Commissioner Mary Jo Beverly did not attend the meeting at which the action took place.
