PICKING UP THE PIECES

THOMASVILLE — Standing near the rubble that was the church he pastored, Clement Choice said Saint Thomas AME Church members have come to terms with what happened on the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 1.

The roof of the historic 700 N. Broad St. church caved in. Soon, walls began to buckle and collapsed.

Because of uncertainty about the building’s structural stability, the church had not been used since March.

After walls began to collapse two weeks ago, the building, completed in 1924, was razed the next day.

“We’re just trying to pick up the pieces and move on,” Choice said.

Insurance paperwork is being filed.

Insured property involves not only the church, but land and a residence behind the church and the nearby parsonage.

The debris cannot be removed, nothing can be done until church officials meet with insurance company representatives, the pastor explained.

An open letter from Choice says a new church will cost more than $1 million.
