Hart elected Pavo mayor pro tem

THOMASVILLE — Pavo City Council duty and serving as mayor pro tem is nothing new to the second-in-line in Pavo government.

James Hart was elected Pavo mayor pro tem after Bob Miller, former mayor pro tem, could no longer serve.

Mayor Faye Walker broke the 3-3 tie vote to elect Hart. Neither Walker nor Becky Reyes, Pavo city clerk, would name the other councilmember nominated for mayor pro tem.

“They voted by writing their name (nominees) on a piece of paper,” the mayor said.

Walker said she asked the council if they wanted to vote again, and the panel opted for her to vote and break the tie.

Miller, the former mayor pro tem, was charged in February with striking his wife numerous times. He was released on a $2,500 bond.

According to bond conditions, Miller cannot return Pavo until the case is disposed of. The case is to be heard Tuesday, April 20, in State Court of Thomas County.

Hart, 56, served on Pavo City Council for about 25 years before stepping down. Wanting to get involved in city government again, Hart successfully sought a return to the council in 2009.

Hart, an emergency medical technician with Thomas County Emergency Medical Service for about 15 years, serves on Pavo council police, maintenance and fire committees.

As mayor pro tem, he will work with Pavo police, fire and street departments to ensure city services are carried out properly.
