THOMASVILLE — Thomasville Toyota personnel say the current recall for several of the auto company’s models is going smoothly at the dealership.
Approximately two weeks ago, Toyota announced a recall on some newer models for “a rare condition of possible sticking accelerator pedals,” Travis Ostrom, managing partner, said Monday.
“Within 72-96 hours, Toyota came up with the repair and we received the parts last week,” he said. “We have repaired all instock merchandise and all customers who have brought in their vehicles are up-to-date.”
The recall affects eight models:
• Camry 2007-2010;
• Corolla 2009-2010;
• RAV 4 2009-2010;
• Tundra 2007-2010;
• Highlander 2009-2010;
• Matrix 2009-2010;
• Sequoia 2008-2010;
• Avalon 2005-2010.
“We use two different supplies for the accelerator pedals and one of the suppliers is involved in the recall,” Ostrom said. “The best thing to do is for the consumer to call the dealership, set up an appointment and bring in the vehicle.”
The official said all customers who may have an affected vehicle were called and a blanket e-mail was sent to all customers in the dealership’s database alerting them of the issue. He estimated this could be between 400 and 600 vehicles.
“We’ve gotten a lot of phone calls and have had personal contact with customers,” Ostrom said. “Toyota owners have been very understanding and I’ve heard very few fears on behalf of our client base. They believe in the product, the brand and view it as just a recall.”
Chris Sapp, fixed operations director, said the recall process of replacing parts in consumer vehicles has gone pretty well. Other than a brief lag when the dealership ran out of parts after the initial shipment, everything has gone fairly quickly.
“I’ve heard they are making 200,000 a day now so we should not have that problem again,” Sapp said. “The pedal reinforcement is where we are installing a metal bar inside the gas pedal. Inside there are two plates made of plastic and the metal bar is to insure there is a gap between those two pieces so it does not close.”
He said groups have been put together to handle just these recall repairs and customers should expect the repair to take about an hour.
The 2007-2010 Camry also has another part to its recall, Sapp said, involving a carpet modification..
“That is the one that is taking some time,” he said. “We’ve got extended hours Tuesdays and Thursdays just for those cars. We are replacing the tibia pad, molded into the floorboard, with one not quite as thick, putting new carpet over it and then reshaping the accelerator pedal.”
He said customers have “been fantastic.”
“A few were extremely concerned but the general attitude has been great and way better than I was expecting,” Sapp said.
He said the dealership will accommodate as many customers as possible each day.
Customer Theresa Hurst said her family has two Toyota Tundras they bought in 2007. She took the vehicles to the dealership Saturday in order to make the necessary repairs.
“At first I heard it was the floor mats — said they got underneath the gas pedal — but I thought no way, as long as I keep the mat pulled out nice and even so I wasn’t too worried,” Hurst said.
“Then, I heard it was the gas pedal but I’d never had a problem in the past, fortunately, so I wasn’t too concerned about it either, but I thought I’d go ahead and get it fixed and be done with it.”
Hurst says Toyota’s recall is no different from Ford’s or any other product.
“The dealership has the parts so all people have to do is call them and take in their vehicle,” she said. “It is better to go ahead and fix it because it won’t cost you anything and it can be taken care of very quickly. What more can you ask for?”
There was talk Monday on various media outlets that another Toyota recall could take place as early as today.
“There has been talk that the 2010 Prius could need a computer reset for the braking system on models from May to December 2009,” Ostrom said. “We’re waiting for final word on that now from Toyota, but I expect there could be an answer possibly today.”
He said Toyota still has the most reliable and safest cars a customer can buy.
“Toyota has been working around the clock and they have a relentless commitment to building the most reliable, safest vehicles that customers can buy,” Ostrom said. “Thomasville Toyota is just as committed, working late into the night to satisfy all customer needs in relation to this recall.”
The recall has not put Hurst off from being a Toyota customer.
“Definitely not,” she said. “I get service here I couldn’t get anyplace else, period. I’ve got no problem going back for two more Tundras, whenever we decide to trade up.”
