Resident shot in burglary attempt

THOMASVILLE — An early morning attempted home invasion left the occupant with a gunshot wound and authorities with no suspect description.

Lt. Eric Hampton, public information officer for the Thomasville Police Department, said the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

“Officers responded to a residence in the 900 block of North Madison Street in reference to a possible burglary attempt with a gunshot victim,” he said. “Upon arrival, they met with the victim, who was bleeding from the right forearm.

“He said he was asleep when he heard something kicking on the door. He got up, went to the door, noticed it was being kicked in and started yelling. At that point, a shot was fired through the door by an unknown person or persons.”

The victim, a 24-year-old male, said he had no idea who might be responsible for the attempted home invasion or who fired the shot.

“It appears to have been a shotgun because there were pellets in his arm and in the wall,” Hampton said. “He did not actually see the gun, but based on the evidence there is a good possibility it was a shotgun.”

The victim did not see the suspect(s) and was unable to give a description to authorities, he said.

“The door was kicked but it never separated to where he could see on the other side of it,” Hampton explained. “Witnesses, next door neighbors, heard the commotion but did not see anything to help with a description either.”

A K-9 unit was dispatched to the scene, according to an incident report supplement by Officer Christopher Brock. No direction of travel was available, but the dog did search the area for “any human odor and/or evidence.”

No odor was detected in the immediate area and outside the residence’s front door was asphalt so the dog was unable to begin a track at that point.

The K-9 did track on Lewis Lane from Stevens Street to midway down Lewis toward Oak Street, according to the report.

The victim was taken to Archbold Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Anyone with information on the person(s) responsible are asked to call Crimestoppers at 227-3305, dispatch at 226-2101, criminal investigations at 227-3302, or 911.
