Parades to usher in holiday season

THOMASVILLE — Prepare to usher in the holiday cheer with two local Christmas parades next week.

The annual Thomasville Christmas Parade is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday in downtown. It is organized by the Thomasville YMCA.

“It will start at the intersection of Broad and Clay streets, travel down Broad, turn left onto Smith Avenue and stop in front of the health department,” parade coordinator Cindy Quigg said.

The parade is expected to be a big one.

“This year, we have 92 entries,” Quigg said. “The most we have ever had is 93.”

These entries include Miss Thomasville’s Rose Queen, Miss Thomasville, CNS, South Georgia Ballet and Relay for Life.

“We have six bands,” Quigg said. “These are Thomas County Central High School, Thomasville High School, Thomas County Middle School, MacIntyre Park Middle School, Tallahassee Christian School and Pelham High School.”

There will also be pageant queens from Pavo, Boston and Whigham.

Local and area politicians plan to participate, including city council and county commission members, according to the coordinator.

But, not everyone will be on foot, float or automobile.

“We have two motorcycle groups and several golf carts/four-wheelers,” Quigg said.

And, the season’s special guest is also slated to park his sleigh at the event.

“As always, Santa will make a special appearance,” Quigg said.

The annual Cairo Christmas Parade is slated for 7 p.m. Thursday in downtown, city officials said Wednesday.

It is handled by the Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce.

The Times-Enterprise was unable to contact someone at the chamber Wednesday or Friday for more information about the parade.
