Cairo keeps millage rate steady

CAIRO — Taxpayers in Cairo will not be seeing an increase in the local millage rate this year.

The Cairo City Council unanimously approved to keep its current millage rate at a called meeting Nov. 16.

“The council approved a millage rate of 7.49 mils,” City Manager Chris Addleton said. “That was final adoption. We’re glad to be able to keep the rate the same for another year.”

The 7.49 mils is expected to generate $1,481,305 in revenues, according to the advertised five-year history report. This is a net taxes increase of $6,184 or 0.42 percent from last year’s $1,475,121.

“It is still tight, but we made our final budget in July assuming we would have no increase in ad valorem taxes,” Addleton said.

The millage rate helps fund the city’s FY2010 budget of approximately $36 million. It is usually adopted in late summer or early fall.

“It did happen later this year than usual because we had some digest problems,” Addleton said. “We had some evaluation corrections and had to wait on those for the digest to be completed.”

City property tax bills are expected to go out early next week, the city manager said.

“Citizens will be given 60 days to pay, so bills will likely be due by the end of January,” he said.
