THOMASVILLE — A traditional sound of Christmas, the ringing of a bell, begins Friday.
The Salvation Army will be at major Thomasville retailers during the Christmas season, as the organization has since the inception of the red kettle in 1891. “This year, we have provided programs and assistance for a record number 15,169 people,” said Lt. Matt Cunningham, local Salvation Army commander.
“These aren’t mere statistics, but they are our neighbors, family and friends,” Cunningham explained. “These are people who just a year ago had a comfortable living and are now looking to us in their time of need. These are people who are struggling more than ever. I have had people tell me that just last year they helped us and are now coming to us for help.”
Along with need statistics rising drastically, Salvation Army fund-raising is considerably down.
“The effectiveness of our organization is proven in times like this when we are able to help the most people with the least amount of resources,” said Cunningham. “I ask that when you walk by our red kettle this Christmas season to not forget those in our community who are without.”
Cunningham said those that don’t have cash on hand can go online to www.onlineredkettle.comand to donate over a secure server.
“All donations can be designated for use in our community,” Cunningham said.
