Run for Rover set Saturday

THOMASVILLE — Hook on the leashes and lace up those running shoes: it’s time for the 18th annual “Run for Rover.”

“We have a newly certified USATF course that is both scenic and challenging,” Joyce Patterson, executive director of the Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society said. “This is a great opportunity to run or walk with your dog.”

Ed Williams, president of the humane society board, said the fund-raiser is a fun event.

“We certainly like for people to come out, walk and bring their dogs. It raises money for the humane society and, in tough economic times like these, we certainly can use all the help we can get. We appreciate all the support.”

Carol Jones, senior board member said “a lot of effort has been made to improve the event.”

“We have about 6.1 miles and it has always started at Thomas University, but because the campus is being renovated, we’ve moved the start line to the corner of Millpond Road and Gordon Avenue.”

The course follows Gordon to Junius Street, to Old Monticello Road, to Pinetree Boulevard and then back to Millpond and the university’s entrance, she said.

Saturday’s event begins at 8 a.m. with a 5K run and walk, followed at 9:30 a.m. by a one-mile Fun Run.

Registration starts at 7 a.m. and is $18 on race day or $10 without a T-shirt. Pre-registration is $15.

For children, prices are $6 pre-registration or $8 on race day.

Trophies and medals will be awarded in all age groups, Patterson said.

“A lot of people bring baby carriages or their children,” Jones said. “We hope people will come out and support us. Hopefully, we’ll have great weather to walk the pooches and for the kids. It should be healthy, fun, family event.”
