Detective tracks down snatching suspect through his cell phone

THOMASVILLE — A suspect in a purse-snatching case made several mistakes that led to his arrest.

A disloyal friend might be considered among his shortcomings.

A 68-year-old woman reported early Monday afternoon that her purse — containing $118, credit cards and personal papers — had been snatched through an open window of her vehicle at Horrix and Law streets.

“She said a man reached into her car and grabbed it while she held onto it,” said Lt. Eric Hampton, Thomasville Police Department public information officer.

The woman was in the 400 block of Horrix to check on a vacant house she owned. She found three men standing on a porch at the house and asked if they had read the no-trespassing sign on the property.

The men walked away, but one returned to the woman.

“One of the males came back to her car to ask how much she was renting the property for,” Hampton said. The man said he worked on a plantation and could pay rent.

The man told the woman her car door was not shut, opened the door and closed it.

“As he shut the door, he reached over her body and snatched her purse from her,” according to the officer.

As the suspect ran, a ballcap he was wearing fell to the ground.

Someone recognized the man, Quenton Rashed Lankford, 19, of 312 Law St., and provided police with the suspect’s cell phone number.

“He talked to an investigator on the cell phone and was tracked down,” Hampton said.

Lankford was arrested Tuesday in Boston. He is charged with robbery by sudden snatching.
