THOMASVILLE — Races for Thomasville City Board of Education, Thomasville City Council and Thomas County’s smaller municipalities will deliver a lot of activity on election day in November.
Karl A. Abrams, Gregory Lamar Robinson, Lewis Brunner and Hazel Thomas Jones qualified to seek a city school board seat being vacated by Donnell Carley Jr., who is not seeking re-election.
J. Renee Gordon will face incumbents Darrell R. Allen and John A. Everett for a District 2 seat on the city school board. The top two vote-getters will win the two seats in the district.
Gregory A. Hobbs qualified to run against Earl Williams Jr. for a Thomasville City Council seat.
Incumbent Thomasville city council members Roy Campbell and Max Beverly are unopposed.
Mayors and council members in Thomas County’s small towns are being challenged.
In Meigs, June Layton, a city council member, qualified to run for mayor. Layton’s husband, Jimmy Layton, is Meigs police chief and acts as city manager.
Also seeking the Meigs mayoral post are Andrew Wurst and Viva Bass. Incumbent Mayor Annie Doris Lovejoy did not seek re-election.
Incumbent Meigs council members Dorothy Wimes and Frank Larry Richards Jr. qualified to seek re-election. Also qualifying was Orville Creager. Three council seats were up for re-election.
In Boston, incumbent Mayor Samuel D. “Danny” Groover III is being challenged by Walter Ronald Collins Sr.
For the Post 2 Boston City Council seat, incumbent Betty Harris is being challenged by Ronnie Joe Harris and Edward Jones.
Michael Edwards Sr. and Beverly Collins are seeking the Post 1 Boston council seat. Bertha Hunter, incumbent, is not seeking re-election.
Barwick Mayor Ned Simmons is being challenged by Walt Yost and Scott McCammon.
Dorothy Beaty will not seek re-election to the Post 1 Barwick City Council seat. Tammy Cone and Greg Parker will run for the office.
Neither is Carl Griffin, incumbent Post 4 Barwick council member, seeking re-election. Stephen Hobbs and I.J. McCann are candidates for the seat.
Coolidge Mayor Diane H. Causey also faces challenges in the November election. Major Charles Barnwell and Chad Ryan Mitchell qualified to run against Causey.
Four candidates are seeking three Coolidge City Council seats: Willie Henderson, John Blaha, Janice Moore and Harold T. “Tommy” Baker Jr.
In Ochlocknee, incumbent council members Raiford Long, Lillie Bell Williams and Joseph Lewis are seeking re-election.
Others seeking Ochlocknee council posts are Michael Herring, Faye Hemby, L.D. Johnson and Roscoe Daphney.
Three Pavo City Council seats are to decided in November. Incumbents LaTonia Bryant and Bob Miller qualified for re-election. Also qualifying were James Hart, Valda Hagan and Marvin Bryan.
Because city offices up for re-election in Cairo and Whigham are unchallenged, November elections will not be held in the two cities.
