Small towns prepared for candidate qualifying

THOMASVILLE — The general election is more than two months away, but those who want to seek offices in Thomas County’s small towns must qualify this week.

The candidate-qualifying period also will open Monday in Whigham in Grady County.



Boston

Candidates should qualify at city hall between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The position of Boston mayor and two council seats will be decided in the Tuesday, Nov. 3, general election.

Danny Groover is incumbent mayor, while Bettie Harris and Bertha Hunter hold council seats to be decided.

The fee to qualify to run for mayor is $60, and $30 is the fee for council seats.



Barwick

The mayoral post and two city council seats also are up for re-election in Barwick.

Ned Simmons is the incumbent mayor. City council seats held by Dorothy Beatty and Carl Griffin will be decided in November.

Qualifying is at city hall from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The fee to run for mayor is $27 and $15 for council seats.



Coolidge

In Coolidge, seats held by Mayor Diane H. Causey and by council members Tommy Baker, Willie Henderson and John Blaha are up for re-election.

For mayor, the qualifying fee is $54. Those qualifying to seek council seats must pay a fee of $27.

Candidates should qualify at city hall from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.



Meigs

Mayor Annie Doris Lovejoy is up for re-election, along with council members Frankie Richards Jr., Dorothy Wimes and June Layton.

City hall candidate-qualifying times are: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 8:30 a.m. to noon, 1 to 4 p.m.; Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to noon.



Ochlocknee

The Ochlocknee mayor, Ronelle Searcy, is up for re-election, as are council members Raiford Long, Richard Roberson, Joseph Lewis and Lillie Bell Williams,

The qualifying fee for mayor is $10.80 and $5.40 for council seats.

City hall qualifying hours are 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday and from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.



Pavo

Three city council seats will be decided in November.

Incumbents in the seats to be decided are Latonia Bryant, Bob Miller and Dianne Jackson.

The qualifying fee is $10.80.

Candidates may qualify at city hall between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.



Whigham

Five council seats and the mayoral position are up for election.

Jimmie Laing is the incumbent mayor. Incumbent council members are Carole Booth, Melanie Clark, Jim Sellers, Lisa Sellers and George Trulock Jr.

Qualifying fees are $144 for mayor and $36 for city council.

Qualifying is from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at city hall.
