Odor leads agents to drugs

THOMASVILLE — Narcotics agents knew they were in the right place when they got a whiff of the odor permeating an area outside a Meigs residence.

Officers responded to 57 Palmer Road on a tip that marijuana and cocaine were being sold at the house.

Jaboris “Booger” Copeland, 26, who is on probation in a drug case, lives at the address, said Kevin Lee, Thomas County/Thomasville Narcotics/Vice Division chief.

Several men, including Copeland, were standing in a carport area when lawmen arrived.

“We could smell marijuana that had been smoked,” Lee said.

Officers found marijuana in Copeland’s pocket.

Also found at the residence was a Crown Royal bag containing 77 grams of marijuana and hand scales. The bag was on steps next to where Donnell Edwards stood.

Edwards, 39, 4059 Cabin St., Meigs, claimed the marijuana, Lee said.

Roncin Mitchell, 31, 2019 Vine St., Meigs, another visitor at the house, was searched. Agents found two small bags of marijuana in his pocket.

“We also found a small bag of marijuana on Edwards,” Lee said.

With assistance from Meigs police, the men were arrested.

Mitchell and Copeland were charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession.

Edwards is charged with marijuana possession with intent to distribute.

“We didn’t find any cocaine,” Lee said.
