Pedestrian killed, driver suspected DUI

THOMASVILLE — A Thomasville man involved in a wreck was killed when he left the scene, despite a law-enforcement officer’s instructions to the contrary.

Sammie Lee Jr., 58, was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a wreck at U.S. 19 and Ga. 202 Saturday night.

“He had refused to stay on scene and walked away and was struck,” said Senior Lt. Ron James, Thomas County Sheriff’s Office patrol commander.

Lee was walking west across the southbound lane of 19 about 8:30 p.m. as a 2005 Chevrolet 2500 traveled south on the U.S. highway.

Lee walked into the path of the pickup truck, which was driven by Russell English, 30, of Botaga, Texas, said Luke Taylor, communications equipment officer at Thomasville Post 12 Georgia State Patrol.

English applied brakes to avoid striking Lee, but was unable to stop, Taylor said.

The right front of the pickup struck Lee.

“After impact, the pedestrian came to final rest in the southbound lane,” Taylor said.

The truck came to rest on the southbound shoulder of U.S. 19.

English was charged with driving under the influence.

He was released that night from the Thomas County Jail on a $1,100 bond.
