THOMASVILLE — An argument over cereal led to an incident of aggravated assault with a crowbar, Thomas County Sheriff’s Office investigators said Monday.
The incident occurred at approximately 1 a.m. at 72 Allison Lane in Thomasville.
Tony Lee Thomas, 47, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault against his roommate, Weldon Atkinson, 55, who was hit in the head with the tool.
“They apparently got into an argument earlier over cereal,” Lt. Tim Watkins, chief investigator, said.
Investigator Jason Carroll said the two men did have a verbal dispute over some cereal and, after Atkinson went to bed, Thomas went out to the shed, retrieved the crowbar and taped an empty box of cereal to it.
“He then went into the victim’s bedroom,” Carroll said. “The victim went to sit up in bed and Mr. Thomas struck him in the head with the crowbar approximately four times.”
Thomas then left the residence and went to a neighbor’s house.
“He told them he thought he killed somebody,” the investigator said. “The neighbors called 911.”
Deputies arrived on the scene and awoke the victim’s son, who was asleep at the residence.
Atkinson was found in his bed, EMS was called and he was transported to Archbold Memorial Hospital.
Carroll said Atkinson received multiple skull fractures and was in ICU on Sunday.
A call was made to the hospital in order to ascertain his condition on Monday, but no information was available at press time.
Thomas’ bond was denied Monday afternoon. He is being held at Thomas County Jail.
