Principal opening draws healthy interest

THOMASVILLE — There is healthy interest in the soon-to-be-vacant Cairo High School principal position.

Grady County Schools Superintendent Dr. Tommy Pharis said the system received 21 applications for the job. The cutoff time was 4 p.m. Friday.

“We’ve had a pretty good turnout,” he said. “I thought we might have a few more, but am I pleased with the pool we have? Absolutely. We’ve got some local applications and some from outside the system. I know at least one is out-of-state (Florida). We’ve not had time to look at too many of the specifics yet, but it looks like we have a strong pool of candidates.”

Current Principal Tim Helms submitted his resignation March 26 in order to accept a position as deputy superintendent in Houston County (Perry). He will finish out the the current school year before leaving CHS.

The school system began advertising the position at the end of March.

“We want to do a thorough search within the system and outside it,” he said.

Pharis expected interviews to start within the next few weeks. He said the system will look over the applications, contact applicants of interest and then conduct interviews.

“I think we’ll probably start the week of April 28, but that is dependent on scheduling,” he explained. “I don’t think there will be a set number of applicants we talk to. It will depend on whoever we believe might be the person for the principalship at Cairo High School. The tentative plan is for us to be able to make a recommendation to the board of education no later than its May meeting, but if we need more time we are certainly going to take that time. We’re not set on a timeline procedure. We’re not going to rush through this process. We will take all the time necessary to ensure we make the right selection.”
