Log truck slams utility pole, house

THOMASVILLE — An early morning traffic incident in Cairo on Wednesday left a utilities pole snapped in two and a home damaged.

Cairo Police Department Patrol Officer Mike Carr said the incident involved a J & D Trucking log truck driven by David Henley of Camilla. Traveling east on Fourth Avenue SE, it collided with a Jeep Cherokee driven by Ellen Register, 17, of Cairo, traveling north on South Broad Street.

“The log truck was going too fast for conditions,” said Carr. “It struck the passenger vehicle in the front and spun it around into the east-bound lane. The log truck hit the vehicle, clipped a city utility pole, a mailbox and then hit a residence.”

The speed limit along that stretch of road is 35 mph. The incident occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m.

Luckily, said Carr, there were no serious injuries.

“The young female, due to her age, was taken to Grady General Hospital as a precautionary measure, but she’s OK,” he said.

Carr is not sure how much damage the residence, 21 Fourth Avenue SW, sustained.

“There was damage on the side and probably some more that a contractor will see after an inspection,” he said. “No one was home at the time.”

It took approximately five hours to replace the pole and open the road again.

Rod Prince, energy services director, said the call came around 7:10 a.m. and workers finished with the pole at 12:55 p.m.

“The truck snapped the pole in two,” said Prince. “It was one of our major feeders, but the line didn’t break. We didn’t have any customers out, but we had to replace the pole. It could have been a lot worse.”

Cairo Fire Chief Donald Towne said the department arrived on the scene, assessed the situation and took care of Register before EMS arrived.

“We were very fortunate that there was only minor structural damage to the house and there was no fuel spillage from either vehicle,” said Towne.

Grady EMS Director Billy Rathel was not on duty at the time of the call, but said medics who came in told him the scene could have been a “really bad” call.

Carr said officials are still working the case.

“The truck driver was cited for driving too fast for conditions,” he said. “The vehicle has been impounded, pending inspection by the DOT. I expect more charges could be pending once that inspection is complete.”
