CAIRO — A Cairo woman and her 4-month-old daughter were abducted late Sunday evening by the child’s father, according to the Cairo Police Department.
Police say Oscar Gomez, 30, broke into the woman’s home on Tenth Street Sunday just before 11 p.m. and left with the baby. The mother, Marta Gomez Diaz, 18, ran after the man and jumped into his vehicle as he fled.
Cairo Police Chief Keith Sandefur is confident the mother and child have been taken out of the Cairo area.
Gomez and Diaz were married in Mexico, according to information obtained by the police. At this time, the marital status of the two is not clear.
Gomez may have taken the two to Tampa, Fla., where he has been living, Sandefur said.
“Over the past couple of weeks, he had gone by the residence at least twice and asked her to move to Tampa with the child. She had refused to do so,” he said. “Sunday morning, he went by the residence and asked her to consider going, and she would not. That’s why we feel she is there against her will.”
The Cairo Police Department has issued Levi’s Call — an emergency alert system to deliver vital information to broadcasters and the public about a missing child and abductors — in hopes of catching Gomez and returning the victims safely.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have also been brought in on the case.
