Charge in Boston death no-billed

By Patti Dozier

THOMASVILLE — A Thomas County grand jury did not find sufficient evidence to indict a Boston man in the January shooting death of another Boston resident.

Perris Lee Brooks, 47, 952 Martin Road, Boston, was charged with voluntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of James Dunbar, 49, Hannah Street, Boston.

A Boston police officer found Brooks administering first aid to Dunbar after the Jan. 23 shooting.

Dunbar had been at 1354 Martin Road, where the shooting occurred, earlier that night. While there, he had been in an altercation with a woman, Thomas County Sheriff’s Office investigators said at the time of the shooting.

Dunbar returned to the house that night. Brooks and the woman were sitting in Brooks’ pickup truck in the front yard.

Investigators said Dunbar, armed with a sawed-off shotgun, got out of the Dodge Stratus he was driving and pointed the firearm at Brooks and the woman.

Brooks also had a shotgun in his vehicle and shot Dunbar.

Someone in the residence called E-911, where a dispatcher provided first-aid instructions that were conveyed to Brooks until Thomas County Emergency Medical Service personnel arrived.

Also no-billed was Frederick Donaldson on a charge of aggravated assault.
