Board seeks litter help from neighbor

CAIRO — The Grady County Board of Commissioners unanimously agreed at its Tuesday meeting to send a request letter to the Thomas County Board of Commissioners regarding using some Thomas County inmates for litter pickup.

The board authorized Chairman Al Ball to sign a request and send it to the Thomas County commissioners.

The possibility was brought up to Ball by a Thomas County commissioner during a general discussion at the annual Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) conference in Savannah, held April 22-25.

“It was brought to Mr. Ball’s attention that Thomas County might be willing to work with Grady County if Grady County could furnish the inmates’ supervisor and the transportation,” said county administrator Rusty Moye after the meeting.

He also said that Autry State Prison did not show interest in pursuing an inmate detail with Grady County.

Moye spoke with state court probationer Red Hills Community Probation in January about setting up community service workers to pick up litter during the week on a daily basis.

“We’re still trying to work with them on that, but Red Hills can’t provide the numbers we need to call it a crew or as many days as we need,” he said.

Commissioner Elwyn Childs made a motion to get in contact with the Thomas County commissioners to see what type of arrangement could be made between the two counties.

Commissioner Benny Prince seconded the motion.

“There’s plenty of litter in Grady County,” he said. “I think we need to try it and get the specifics.”

Moye said the Thomas County Board of Commissioners was not aware that the Grady County Commissioners were sending the request.
