EDITORIAL: Stand up against lawlessness

The U.S. Constitution grants Congress the power to declare war. Such action, however, is supposed to be reserved for foreign enemies — not American citizens.

Democrats have tried almost every trick in the book to pass a health care reform bill that most Americans vigorously oppose. They have attempted to force-feed the costly legislation down our throats by greasing it with slimy Senate bribes paid for with taxpayers’ money.

Thankfully, numerous self-imposed deadlines to do the dirty deed have passed because average citizens, ones like those on Thomasville’s Freedom Line, have consistently voiced their disapproval. A nationwide barrage of phone calls, faxes and e-mails to congressmen have temporarily held off the assault.

Undaunted, Democrats keep bending or ignoring the rules of Congress in order to achieve their unpopular goal. Apparently, no level of deceit is beyond their reach.

The latest mind-boggling disregard for the rule of law is the “Slaughter Solution,” where the House "deems" the Senate’s reform bill to have been passed by the House without actually conducting a vote. This would make it easier to merge the House and Senate bills and get them to President Obama’s desk.

No one with an appreciation for freedom should stand for this atrocity whether they want health care reform or not. Even the mere consideration of this “solution” is outrageous.

All bills that make it to the President’s desk should pass constitutional muster and stand on their own merits. They also should have the support of a majority of Americans.

We stand should-to-shoulder with the Freedom Line and encourage other concerned citizens to join it for Friday’s 12:30 p.m. rally in front of Rep. Sanford Bishop’s office at 137 E. Jackson St.
