THOMASVILLE — Arts for the Community at Thomas University presents the husband and wife viola and harpsichord duo Melissa and Charles Brewer in concert as part of their “Fridays at Noon” series Friday in the chapel of Thomasville First United Methodist Church.

The Baroque music program on Friday will feature works by Bach, Couperin and Vivaldi.

The Brewers share a love of chamber music in addition to their abiding love for each other, and among their first experiences was playing music by C.P.E. Bach.

Since that time, they have played together in a number of ensembles including the Tallahassee Bach Parley and in the first modern staged production of John Eccles “Semele” at Florida State University.

Melissa Brewer began her professional studies in violin and viola at the University of Miami, and continued her studies at the University of Wisconsin Madison.

She has performed with groups as diverse as the Florida Philharmonic, Miami Chamber Orchestra, West Palm Beach Opera Company, and the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, and artists as varied as Itzak Perlman and Frank Sinatra.

On period instruments, she has performed with F.S.U. Baroque Ensemble, Baroque Southeast, the Apollo Ensemble, and the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra.

She plays on a 1760 Locky Hill viola.

Charles Brewer is an associate professor of musicology in the College of Music at Florida State University.

He received his Bachelor of Arts from S.U.N.Y. Binghamton with a certificate in medieval studies, a Master of Arts from Columbia University, and a doctorate from the City University of New York.

He specializes in medieval and baroque music: his research has appeared in a wide range of publications including “Music & Letters” and “The New Grove Dictionary of Opera.”

In addition, he has received grants from the University of Alabama, Florida State University, the Fulbright/Hays Commission, the Department of Education, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the International Research and Exchanges Board for research in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, France, Austria, Switzerland and Great Britain.

Friday’s concert is free and open to the public. A complimentary luncheon provided by the church will follow the performance.
