Bertha C. Lord

Funeral services for Bertha C. Lord of Hawkinsville will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2009, in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Service. The committal service will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery. Mrs. Lord went home to be with the Lord Saturday, July 25, 2009. Born in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel L., Sr. and Ellavenia Welch Cowart and Lillian Smith Cowart. Mrs. Lord was retired from the Hawkinsville Telephone Company and was a member of Hawkinsville First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She had been very active in her community and enjoyed reading, working in her yards and bird watching. Mrs. Lord is survived by a daughter, Betty L. Freeman of Cordele; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gene and Marsha Lord of Thomasville and Ricky and Amelia Lord of Hawkinsville; five grandchildren and their spouses, Jef and Eva Freeman of Valdosta, Michael and Stephanie Lord of Auburn, Ala., Mark and Ashly Lord of Carrollton, Jason Lord of Hawkinsville, and Lyndsey Lord of Jacksonville, Fla.; nine great-grandchildren, Bubba Freeman and his wife, Brittany of Cordele, Mandy Freeman of Lake City, Fla.; Ben Garcia, Jenny Garcia and Travis Freeman, all of Valdosta, Matthew Lord and Andrew Lord, both of Auburn, Ala., and Mason Lord and Caroline Lord, both of Carrollton; a great-great-grandson, Jaden Freeman of Cordele; two brothers, Sammy Cowart of Davisboro and Willard Cowart and his wife, Mary of Sandersville; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Donald Freeman; siblings, Homer Cowart, Bernice Yarbrough, Inez Welch, Dorothy Prince, Beatrice Frazier, Lindy Cowart, David Cowart and Sybil Cowart. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, July 27, 2009, from 6 p.m. until 8: p.m. The family request donations be made to The Baptist Childrens Home, 2930 Flowers Rd., Atlanta, Ga. 30341, The Methodist Children’s Home, 500 S. Columbia Dr., Decatur, Ga. 30030 or the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Homes, Inc., P.O. Box 1000, Stockbridge, Ga. 30281.
