Frances Teate

Frances Lehmann Teate, 88, died Nov. 20, 2009 at home from pulmonary fibrosis and complications from Type 1 Diabetes. She passed away peacefully with her children at her side. Frances was born July 12, 1921 in LaGrange, Ga., to Frances Storm Lehmann and Casper Lehmann. She attended Georgia State College for Women and graduated in 1942 with a degree in home economics. She worked as a dietician at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta where she met her husband, Dr. Luten Teate. Frances and Luten were married in 1945, and began raising their four children, as they moved to Cincinnati, Philadelphia and Miami before returning to Atlanta to settle down. Once established in Atlanta, Frances began an active life as mother and wife as she enjoyed her hobbies of cooking and entertaining. The family spent summers camping throughout the United States and later working as volunteers in Central America through the organizations of Care-Medico and Amigos de las Americas. Frances was always quite active within her church, both as a volunteer to provide food to the homeless and working together with her husband as coordinators for the Angel Tree program which provided gifts to needy children every Christmas. Frances also spent many hours functioning as a Stephens Minister at her church. Her primary focus in life was her family and her faith in God. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 61 years. Frances is survived by her children: sons, Chip Teate and Mike Teate both of Decatur; daughters Susan Sexton and Nancy Miers, both of Gainesville; their spouses; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. — Cremation Society of Georgia
