Kenneth Williams Jr.

Services for Kenneth Williams Jr., 70, of New Rochelle, N.Y., are at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at Willow Head Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Lonnie Robinson, the Rev. Terry Dismuke will officiate and interment is in Summerhill Cemetery. Pallbearers are friends of the family. Mr. Williams died Aug. 27 at James Peters VA Medical Center. Born March 15, 1939, in Thomasville, he was a son of the late Kenneth and Octavia Williams. On Nov. 27, 1964, in Mount Vernon, N.Y., he married Martha V. Denson. He graduated from Douglass High School, attended Stillman College where he received a bachelor of arts degree history graduating cum laude, attended Georgetowne University in Washington, D.C. and received a master’s degree in social work from Fordham University. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity, member of Bethel Baptist Church in Mount Kisco, N.Y. where he served on the usher board, served as a mentor for youth organizations and worked for 30 years as a social worker at the Department of Social Services. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after two years of service. He accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age at Centennial Missionary Baptist Church. In his leisure time he enjoyed mentoring to friends and family. He enjoyed attending and visiting churches. His passion was gardening, traveling, sightseeing and staying current with world events, photography and most of all his family and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Martha Denson Williams; two daughters, Katrina Postell (James) of Columbia, S.C., Vanessa L. Byrd (Vincent) of Stafford, Va.; grandchildren, Jasmine, Jasia and Kendric Postell of Columbia, Vaughn, Victoria, Vance and Vincent Byrd Jr. of Stafford, Va.; siblings, Charlie Williams (Cora) of Danville, Va., Viola Williams of Hartsdale, N.Y., Carlie Williams (Margaret), Carey Williams, Walter Williams (Martha) all of Thomasville, Clara Cradle of Asheville, N.C., Belle Williams of Thomasville; mother-in-law, Evelyn Bivens; brother-in-law, Rufus Denson of Durham, N.C.; sister-in-law, Christine Ernest (Earl); nieces, Mary Penn (William) of Hartsdale, N.Y., Loretta Foster (Aubrey) of Hill, N.Y., W. Frances George (Ron) of Patterson, N.Y., Cyndie Williamson (Ron) of Jonesboro, Janice Williams (Kofi) of Mt. Kisco, N.Y., Rena Stinson (Luke) of Cocoa, Fla., Janis Shelton (Jamie) of Fayetteville, Cheryl Plowden (Clarence) of Fayetteville, Mary Jupiter of Atlanta, Octavia Romans (Lloyd) of Ellenwood, Ga., Viola Delois Williams of Thomasville, Kimberly Denson Davis, Kayla Davis both of Durham, N.C.; nephews, Charlies Williams Jr. of Greensboro, N.C., Mark A. Williams of Richmond, Va., Aaron Williams of Jonesboro, Ronald T. Williams (Catherine) of Fredericksburg, Md., Andre Dismuke (Veronica) of Augusta, Terry Dismuke (Monique) of Winder; very dear cousins, Ella Mae Graham of Brooklyn, N.Y., Lucy B. Bradley of Sacramento, Calif.; and dear family friends, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Walker of New Rochelle, N.Y., the Johnson family, Claude, Nathan, Calvin, Claudell and Bettye of Mount Vernon, N.Y. and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth Williams Sr. and Octavia Williams; brother, Jake Williams; sister, Elizabeth Rogers; and nephew, Johnnie Williams Sr. The viewing is from 9 a.m. until the funeral hour today at the church with no viewing after the eulogy. — Hatcher-Peoples Funeral Home
