Cairo receives federal grant award for flood zone structures

THOMASVILLE — Property owners of several structures affected by flooding during Tropical Storm Fay in Cairo will have an opportunity to participate in a voluntary grant program.

The City of Cairo recently received word it has been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, for a Hazard Mitigation Grant Program award of $104,231 with a federal share of $78,173, state share of $10,423, and a local share of $15,635.

The Cairo City Council approved City Manager Chris Addleton to sign the award agreement at its June 13 meeting.

The city has been trying to get a grant for at least two years, Addleton said.
